KYC

KYC (Know Your Customer) is the process by which a gambling operator verifies who a player is — confirming identity, age, address and, where required, source of funds — before or shortly after allowing them to deposit and play.

In regulated iGaming, KYC is a licence condition, not a formality. Typical layers include:

  • Identity and age verification — document checks or database lookups against credit and government registers;
  • Address verification — proof of residence in a permitted jurisdiction;
  • Enhanced due diligence (EDD) — source of funds and source of wealth checks triggered by deposit thresholds or risk flags;
  • Ongoing screening — PEP and sanctions list matching.

When checks must be completed varies by market: some regulators require full verification before the first bet, others before withdrawal. The trend across Tier-1 markets is firmly toward verification up front.

Operationally, KYC is a conversion problem as much as a compliance one: every extra document request costs first-time depositors. Modern stacks automate approvals via API-based verification providers, escalating only edge cases to manual review.

Why it matters: KYC failures are among the most common grounds for regulatory fines and licence reviews. Automating the flow inside your platform — as the Vuch compliance suite does — protects both the licence and the funnel.
