In-Play Betting

Published: 2026-08-12Last updated: 2026-08-12

In-play betting (live betting) is wagering on sporting events after they have started, with odds recalculated continuously as the action unfolds — next goal, current-set winner, match outcome at any moment.

In mature markets, in-play is widely reported to generate the majority of sportsbook turnover on headline sports, because it converts a single pre-match decision into dozens of betting moments per event. It is also the most technically demanding product in iGaming:

  • Data latency is the whole game — odds derive from live event feeds; if a bettor's stream or courtside information is faster than the book's feed, every delay is exploitable. Suppliers pay premiums for official low-latency data;
  • Bet delay and acceptance logic — a configurable few-second delay between bet submission and acceptance protects against betting on already-known outcomes;
  • Automated trading — humans cannot reprice hundreds of concurrent markets; models drive prices with traders supervising exceptions;
  • Market suspension — instant suspends around goals, VAR reviews and injuries, balanced against the UX cost of over-suspending.

Product features cluster around it: cash-out (settling a bet early at current value), live streaming, and live bet builders.

Why it matters: in-play is where sportsbook engagement, margin and risk all concentrate — and its quality is almost entirely a function of the supplier's feed, models and infrastructure. It is the sharpest test to apply when evaluating any sportsbook supplier.
